Assessing the Challenges to Medical Waste Management Program during the COVID-19 Pandemic: Implications for Environmental Sustainability
Bangladesh being an emerging economy is indifferent in struggling to manage the increased amount of MW during this pandemic. Due to having a vulnerable management system, Bangladesh was already struggling with safe and effective waste management before this pandemic, but now the COVID-19 has worsened the case. Managing the wastes violating the standard guidelines by the WHO poses serious risks of exponential disease transmission to waste pickers, caregivers, patients, and the community in general. Furthermore, lack of cleaners’ adequate training, open burning of MW, violation of the WHO’s guidelines etc. have exacerbated dramatically the spread of COVID-19 and also hampered the environment across the country. It is, therefore, a dire need to adopt safe waste management strategies as soon as possible to avoid building up a stockpile and contaminating communities with potentially contagious MW. Successful implementation of MWM initiatives is not so easy task in the context of emerging economies, and there exist a lot of challenges that may hinder the adoption process.
